Off the northwest coast of this well-liked holiday destination, a German tourist was swimming beside her catamaran when she was attacked by a rare shark close to the Canary Islands.
The shark attacked the 30-year-old woman while she was riding a catamaran flying the British flag that had left the island of Gran Canaria on Saturday, September 14.
The incident happened just before 4 p.m. local time, when she lost one of her legs to a bite.
Emergency responders flew 320 miles to the scene of the attack to save her, but she died from the injuries sustained in the helicopter, according to confirmation provided by the authorities to Reuters.

Following the event, the Salvamento MarĂtimo, the Spanish rescue agency, looked into the attack.

There have only been six known shark-related incidences in Spain’s history, according to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
According to the ISAF, there were just 69 reported unprovoked shark attacks globally in 2023. 14 of those 69 attacks resulted in death.
According to the report, Australia accounts for a disproportionate number of shark attacks, with 22% of all attacks occurring there.
